This article addresses some of the major questions instructors have when developing an online course. The author discusses personal experiences with what worked and what didn't work and offers suggestions to motivate students, including the major elements of a well-designed course: an introduction, course description, course schedule, clear description of class policies and disclosure about the policies of the institution. Consideration must also be given to new approaches to lecture notes, setting the mood for the class and student evaluation and feedback. Teachers of online learning communities must remember that the online classroom is very different from the on-campus classroom.
